November 16, 2021, Singapore – The Singapore Stewardship Principles for Responsible Investors are being updated and will undergo a four-week consultation process starting today.

A 12-member Steering Committee, led by Stewardship Asia Centre (SAC) and supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Singapore Exchange, is seeking feedback from industry participants on the proposed changes in the following areas:

  • The definition of investment stewardship
  • Internal structures and governance
  • Stewardship beyond listed companies
  • ESG considerations in investment decision-making
  • Outcomes of stewardship

The Singapore Stewardship Principles (SSP) was first introduced in 2016. The proposed changes seek to advance stewardship practices in Singapore to the next level, and hence will be called SSP 2.0 (The Principles).

Since the launch of the first version of the principles in 2016, capital markets have undergone profound changes as global concerns intensified over the impact of financial investments on the economy, society and the environment.

Stakeholders are demanding that investors, as fiduciaries, address these concerns and become better stewards by demonstrating a genuine intent to deliver sustainable performance and long-term value to clients and beneficiaries by exerting positive influence on their investee companies and issuers. Stewardship is crucial for the wider business and investment ecosystem, as it directs investors to factor in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations in their investment decisions and respond to issues that can influence investment outcomes.

Given the evolving developments, SAC, with the support from the 12-member Steering Committee as set out on page 3 of this press release, has worked on revising the SSP to ensure that The Principles drive best practices for responsible investors.

The consultation process will end on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

SAC has reached out to industry participants from various sectors for feedback. They include members of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, the Asia Pacific Real Estate Association, the CFA Society Singapore, the CPA Australia, the Investment Management Association of Singapore, the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants, Securities Investors Association (Singapore), the Singapore Institute of Directors and the Singapore Venture Capital & Private Equity Association.
