Stewardship Asia Centre Launches Youth Leadership Series with Inaugural Symposium on Ethics and Integrity
Press Release
29 August 2024
The symposium marks the beginning of a series of youth events designed to foster steward leadership among youths to address today’s ethical dilemmas.
Stewardship Asia Centre (SAC) will be introducing a series of youth-focused initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of steward leaders, building on the success of its inaugural Youth Symposium held on August 24th.
Hosted by the North London Collegiate School (Singapore), the symposium brought together nearly 70 student leaders from 11 schools across Singapore to explore the drivers for a collective and better future.
“From the outset, the symposium offered an immersive experience aimed at nurturing the next generation of steward leaders empowered to address tensions in an evolving global landscape. We are very impressed with the participants’ constant curiosity and teamwork throughout the day, and can’t wait to see how they put the Steward Leadership Compass into practice,” said Annisah Smith, Senior Research and Advocacy Manager at SAC. She led a session on personal and organisational steward leadership, guiding participants to discover and embrace their core values and purpose for both their personal endeavours and future careers.
The symposium also featured a series of insightful presentations from notable speakers, including Simone Lim, Co-Founder of City Sprouts; Paul Sng, Producer at Mediacorp; and Jesher Loi, Director of Branding & Marketing at Ya Kun. Their diverse perspectives on steward leadership offered students a deeper understanding of how these principles are applied across various sectors, and can help navigate ethical challenges in those fields.
The students showcased their creativity and analytical skills through innovative presentations on how a values-based framework can help you navigate real world tensions, in areas such as AI and technology, environment, business, media and journalism, and the social sector. Their findings, conveyed through TikTok-style videos and personal sharing, highlighted their ability to address pressing ethical issues with originality and insight.
In a world increasingly characterised by volatility, rapid technological advancements, and climate change, young leaders face significant challenges, including social unrest, income inequality, unregulated development, and digital disruption. As cognitive, vocational, and technical skills alone fall short of preparing youths for these complexities, SAC recognises the need for values-driven leadership.
Rajeev Peshawaria, CEO of SAC, highlighted that true leadership development involves more than just intellectual prowess; it requires a strong foundation in values. He stated, “Our focus is on cultivating leaders who combine cognitive skills with ethical decision-making, enabling them to tackle complexities with integrity and vision. We aim to prepare them to drive impactful change and address global issues with both intelligence and compassion.”
