What values do youths care – and how do these values shape their actions?

Stewardship Asia Centre (SAC) launched the Values to Action survey to understand how core values influence youth decision-making, ethical behaviour and societal engagement.

Based on response from 1,000 youths in Singapore aged 16-24, the findings reveal a generation rooted in ethics and relational values—but navigating pressures and dilemmas remain complex.

  • Youths most strongly associate their peer with trustworthiness, kindness, honesty, empathy and integrity, with trustworthiness emerging as the most strongly associated core value.
  • Youths engage in prosocial behaviour*, but shows variation in how often and in what form it occurs.
  • Core values guide decisions and actions, but personal priorities and peer pressure can sometimes prevent youths from acting in alignment with those values.
  • Youths are passionate about mental and physical well-being and digitalisation issues, while climate change and lack of economic opportunity were identified as Singapore’s top existential challenges.
  • Values matter, but how youths act on them depend on the context. One in two try to find compromises that uphold their values when faced with situational conflicts.
